This project honors the historic significance of Hogan’s Alley and Vancouver’s Black community through Afrocentric design principles developed in collaboration with Hogan’s Alley Society. The design draws inspiration from African architecture, cultural symbols, and the Baobab tree, representing resilience, unity, and community. Vertical elements on the façade evoke a sense of collective uplift, while intricate railing patterns symbolize interconnected histories.

The project respects Chinatown Guidelines, incorporating a sawtooth streetscape, small retail units, setbacks on upper stories, and a continuous street wall. The Main Taxi Building façade at 207 Union Street will be preserved and integrated into the new development, ensuring its historic presence endures. The material palette includes Corten steel panels, reinforcing a connection to the neighborhood’s heritage while creating a bold, timeless presence.
